Found a pet bird? Here’s what to do.

Finding a lost pet bird can be a stressful and confusing experience, but there are a few steps you can take to ensure the bird’s safety and help it find its way back to its owner.

The first step is to assess the bird’s health. Check the bird’s physical condition and make sure it is safe and healthy. If the bird appears injured or sick, contact a veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator immediately. They will be able to provide the necessary medical attention and care.

Second, check for identification. Look for any identification on the bird, such as a leg band or microchip. This information can help you locate the bird’s owner. Many pet birds are microchipped and this can be a quick and easy way to identify the bird’s owner.

Third, contact local rescue organizations. Contact local bird rescue organizations, bird and pet stores, and animal control agencies to report the found bird. They may be able to help locate the bird’s owner or provide temporary care for the bird. They may also have a list of lost pets, and your find might match one of them.

Fourth, make the bird comfortable. Provide the bird with a safe and comfortable temporary home, such as a cage or carrier, with food and water, and perches. Ensure that the cage or carrier is large enough for the bird to move around comfortably and that the bird has access to food and water.

Fifth, post on social media. Post on social media platforms, such as Facebook and The Avian Underground, to let people know that you have found a pet bird. Be sure to include a detailed description of the bird, pictures, and any identification information. This will allow the bird’s owner to recognize their pet and contact you.

Sixth, check media resources. Check local classifieds, such as newspapers, and online platforms, such as The Avian Underground, for lost pet bird listings.

Finally, be patient. Be patient and give the bird’s owner time to come forward. It may take a few days or even weeks for the bird to be reunited with its owner.
